Students took on a STEM challenge to design and build a balloon-powered car using a plastic bottle, wooden skewers, straws, bottle caps, tape, a balloon, and a rubber band. Their goal was to create a car that could move using only the air released from the balloon.
Through testing and redesigning, students learned firsthand how engineers solve problems and improve their designs. We’re excited to share pictures and a video of our students in action, along with our top-performing cars! 👏🔧
Way to go, #CSDGoBeavers 5th grade scientists!

After learning about wheels and axles, students put their knowledge to the test in a hands-on STEM challenge, designing and building wind-powered cars using bottle caps, wooden skewers, straws, paper, and tape.
Using the engineering design process, these #CSDGoBeavers students tested their cars in front of a fan, analyzed the results, and made thoughtful changes to help them travel farther and straighter. Problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity were on full display!
📸 Check out the three winning car designs pictured below! GREAT JOB to all our engineers!

Did you know Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006? Our #CSDGoBeavers first graders sure do! After learning all about the 8 planets in our solar system, students imagined which planet they’d like to live on and wrote about their choice.
Take a peek at Mrs. Lord’s class proudly showing off their out-of-this-world projects! 🚀

Our Cumberland Ski Club members had an awesome first-time experience in Spooner, competing in their very first fun race! Skiers from Hayward, Spooner, and Cumberland hit the course for a 1-kilometer race full of smiles, effort, and excitement.
Afterward, the Spooner Ski Club warmed things up by inviting everyone in for soup and cookies in the warming house, because every great race deserves a cozy celebration! 🍲🍪
For many of our skiers, this was their first race ever, and what a memorable night it was. A great experience, great community, and a lifelong sport to love! ⛷️❤️

Our #CSDGoBeavers fifth grade students shared their appreciation with veterans, and in return, they’ve received heartfelt messages and personal visits from veterans who wanted to say thank you. A powerful reminder that kindness travels farther than we ever imagine. ❤️🫶

Our XC Ski Club kicked off the season with some indoor training on roller skis, and as soon as the snow arrived, they headed outdoors where they belong!
The team traveled to Spooner to join another ski club for a fun-filled practice night, complete with games on skis and technique drills. They’ve also been out enjoying the trails right here on our school campus.
Safe to say they are loving every snowy minute! ☃️❤️

CHS held an Academic Pep Rally to celebrate our incredible students and their outstanding achievements. We’re proud to share that CHS earned the highest report card score in the HON!
Students were also recognized for:
🏅 Perfect Attendance
🔥 The Rigor Award
🎯 Highest ACT Score
🔧 Top CTE Student
🎼 State Honors Musicians
💪 Hardest Working Student Award
And to top it all off, the rally ended with a hilarious moment…one lucky student had her name drawn and got to pie Mr. Hopkins! 🥧😄
Way to go, #CSDGoBeavers HS students—your hard work continues to shine! ❤️🖤

Our #CSDGoBeavers eighth graders spent the day exploring the Chippewa Moraine State Recreational Area, located along the stunning Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This beautiful spot is packed with kettle lakes and incredible glacial features, the perfect outdoor classroom!
Students didn’t just learn about the landscape…they got hands-on, too! They held a snake, tried their hand at axe throwing, went on a scenic hike, and so much more. 🐍
What an unforgettable day of nature, discovery, and fun! 🌲

With help from the middle schoolers, Mrs. P’s class created life-size models of their bodies. The first graders worked hard learning about the major body systems, including the nervous system, digestive system, circulatory system, and the skeletal and muscular systems!
First graders learned fun facts like:
🦴 There are 206 bones in the body.
🫀 It takes about 1 minute for your blood to circulate throughout your entire body.
We can’t thank the middle schoolers enough for helping make this project happen! 🩻❤️

⭐ This year’s theme was “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”
👏 The VFW members selected Charlie Lehmann, Molly Peterson, and Carter Huber as this year's local winners! Their essays will now advance to the district-level competition.
A big shoutout to teachers Mrs. Cifaldi and Mr. McCreary, who helped students brainstorm ideas and craft their essays. Great job, everyone! 🙌

🍂 Mrs. Waite and Ms. Hoeft took a group of 7th graders out to help clean up the yard of an elderly couple in our community.
Cumberland Middle School has been supporting this couple for nearly 10 years, and our students were proud to continue this tradition of kindness and service! ❤️

These #CSDGoBeavers musicians were a part of about 150 kids from 28 different schools. They rehearsed with Master Teachers throughout the day and finished with a performance that evening. Participants include:
🔻 Addy Holmes - Flute
🔻 Kaitlin Johnson - Clarinet
🔻 Lucy Ruppel - Horn
🔻 Adelyn Ordway - Horn
🔻 Britton Elmberg - Horn
🔻 Emmett Jasperson - Trombone
🔻 LeShawn Dyer - Tuba

Peterson has been named to the HON Honorable Mention Team as a Middle Blocker, the only Cumberland player to earn All-Conference recognition this season! 👏
Coach Miller shared his praise, saying:
“We’re proud of Alexis for earning All-Conference recognition and grateful to the entire team for working hard to improve and showing up to compete every night.”
Way to represent, Alexis! 💪🔥

For Halloween, our #CSDGoBeavers 7th graders took on a sweet challenge designing hand devices to pick up their candy! 🍬🤖 The only rules: no real hands in the bowl, and their creations had to resemble a real human hand. From clever mechanisms to one group even adding a vacuum feature, their creativity was on full display! 👏
Next up in STEM: 3D design and Virtual Reality game development, the innovation never stops! 🎮

They started by touring one of our groundwater wells, where Casey explained how tap water makes its way into our homes. Then, they visited the Wastewater Treatment Plant, where Katie did an amazing job showing how used water is cleaned and safely returned to the system. 👏
A huge thank you to these community experts for sharing their knowledge and helping our students see just how important and precious water really is! 💙

🎶🎵 The last week of October, nine of our students from Cumberland High School performed at the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) High School and Middle Level State Honors concerts in downtown Madison and Verona. These students, chosen after intense auditions, rehearse with nationally recognized conductors to prepare and perform challenging pieces of music.
The WSMA State Honors Music Project brings some of Wisconsin’s top young musicians together in a highly disciplined, professional setting. Of the 1,500 high school students who audition, 430 of the finest young musicians in Wisconsin are selected. They unite for the first time in June at a summer camp with their conductor, section coaches, and other students to prepare for their final concert in October.
Middle school students go through a similar audition process, where 300 students in grades 6-8 were selected from more than 1,000 who auditioned for the program in April. These concerts are attended by students, parents, teachers, alumni and general public from around the state and beyond, and mark the highest point of the 2025 WSMA High School State Honors Music Project.
📸 Featured in the photos: High School Honors Students Nadia Benson, Willow Franc, Cash Daniels and Andrew Carlson. Middle Level Honors students and staff include Lucas West, Reina Furseth, Jovina Skinner, Nathan Pierce, Quinn Fauske, Elsa Carlson, and Abella Friese standing with previous director, Janet Holdt.
