Baseball Team Picks up Opening Tournament Victory over Grantsburg
The Cumberland Beavers strong play over the last two weeks continued last Thursday as the team opened up WIAA Tournament play with a 10-6 road victory over Grantsburg. This sent the Beavers into a Regional contest against Barron, played on on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to a Regional Championship game on Wednesday, June 3.
The Pirates jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in last week’s contest, which the Beavers erased with a four-run third inning. Gabe Graf, Calvin Cunningham, and Jack Manor had key hits during the Beavers rally.
The Beavers made it 6-2 with two more runs in the top of the fourth, only to see the Pirates score their own to runs in the bottom of the frame, closing their deficit back to two.
The teams went back and forth during the next two innings with Cumberland still ahead 7-6 as the two squads entered the seventh and final inning.
Parker Peterson started things off for Cumberland in the top of the frame with a single, which would be the only hit of the entire inning. The Beavers added three runs to expand their lead, however, thanks to three base-on-balls and two hit-by-pitches giving them a 10-6 cushion going into Grantsburg’s final ar-bat. Peterson then closed things out with three quick ground outs for an important victory.
Troy Majewski had a big night at the plate for Coach John Peterson with four hits in four at-bats. Tucker Wickstrom added two hits and Caleb Hile a double as Cumberland knocked out 12 total safeties during the game. Mason Capra also contributed an important three walks and scored three Beaver runs.
A victory on Tuesday will likely send Cumberland to St. Croix Falls for a 5:00 pm Regional Championship game on Wednesday. Cumberland will host the D3 Sectional at Islander Park on Tuesday, June 9.
