Northwestern Football Shows Their Strength Against the Beavers; In Bloomer Friday
The Northwestern Tigers showed why they are the class of the HON by crushing the Beavers 66-0 in Conference action last Friday night. This came after they had defeated Hayward 68-0 a week earlier. The Beavers, 2 and 3, hope for better things this Friday when they travel to Bloomer to take on the 1 and 4 Blackhawks at 7:00 pm.
Northwestern is a load even when healthy. With several starters injured, Cumberland had to use a line-up of young and inexperienced players, who were not ready for the juggernaut out of the north, making it a tough night of football.
The Tigers scored by long runs and passes, by kick returns, and by short runs. Twice they scored on their first play following taking over possession. The Beavers were willing, played hard, but were just not able to compete against the HON’s best squad.
The Beavers were held to 100 total yards in the contest, 73 through the air and 27 on the ground. Considering the constant pressure he was under, Sophomore quarterback Colton Gramberg played pretty well in his first start, completing two of six passes for 73 yards. His completions went to Max Odden for 33 yards and Bennett Majewski for 40 yards.
On the ground, the Beavers were held to 27 yards in 20 attempts. Sophomore Elijah Jain led the way with 15 yards in five attempts, while Freshman Griff Weaver showed a lot of fortitude in picking up 11 yards in nine attempts.
Defensively, Sophomore Jake Gilbertson played well while gathering a team-leading nine tackles, while Max Odden had another strong game with eight.
Bloomer has struggled offensively, scoring only eight points a game in posting their 1 and 4 record. They have struggled running the ball and will look go do much of their damage through the air. Quarterback Connor Schemenauer has thrown an average of 23 passes a game for a total of 823 yards and four scores during the season.
