Cumberland Soccer Team Ousted by Amery at WIAA Regional

The Cumberland Boy’s Soccer season came to an end last week with a 3-1 loss to Amery in a D4 Regional opener. Amery went on to win the Regional following a 2-1 victory over #1 seeded Columbus Catholic and a 4-3 win over #5 seeded Northland Pines, which puts them into a Sectional opener this Thursday against Three Lakes/Phelps.

A cold, wet, windy night met the two teams in Amery in the October 21 contest. “Going into the night we knew it was going to be a tough match,” said Head Coach Brent Sellent. The Warriors had defeated the Beavers 4-1 back in August.

The teams went back and forth in the early going before Amery scored 10 minutes into the contest. Cumberland would answer just a few minutes later when Ian Sellent scored on a beautifully placed free kick from 45 yards out.

The game would remain 1-1 at intermission before the Warriors would take a 2-1 lead early in the second half. “From this point on, we had several opportunities to score, but came away empty-handed,” said Sellent. Instead it was Amery who added two more scores to come away with the victory.

Sellent concluded, “We put up a good fight against a strong team. John Richter was great in goal and we played well as a team, Amery just played better.”
